Sharone Walkers

If you want to get exercise and socialize with other Sharone Members, join our Walking Group. We are now walking every Friday, alternating locations--one week around Almaden Lake (Los Alamitos Trail) and the next week in Campbell. For information contact Bette Emanuel. The walk takes about 1-1 1/2 hours. If you like, we will go out for coffee or breakfast afterwards. This is a great way to get exercise and meet other Sharone members.

Pro-Con Forum
on the November Propositions

Tuesday, November 2, 2010 is Election Day. Voters in California will be choosing the next Governor and the next Senator.

In addition, there are nine confusing and controversial propositions.

Two propositions concern redistricting, two others concern what legislative bills should require a 2/3 vote; one would legalize the use of marijuana, one would add a fee for state parks to our vehicle license fees in return for which California voters would receive free entry to all state parks.

Additionally, one proposition would restrict the state's use of gas taxes, redevelopment funds, and property taxes for other than currently designated items. Of the remaining two propositions, one would suspend part of the current global warming/air pollution law, and one concerns business fee reductions.

To help you make your way through the legal thicket of propositions and make an informed choice, join us at Congregation Beth David in Saratoga for this Pro-Con Forum by the League of Women Voters.

The League is a non-partisan organization which researches and presents all sides of issues.

Following the presentation, there will be time for a question-answer period.

Saturday's Reception

Central Pacific Coast Region of Hadassah, as part of its Fall Conference October 16-17, invites you and your guests to a dessert reception and lecture by Dr. Rafi Hofstein, Chairman of the Board of Hadasit.

Established in 1986, Hadasit is the Technology Transfer Company of Hadassah Medical Organization. Hadasit's mission is to promote and commercialize the vast intellectual property and R&D capabilities generated at Hadassah on an ongoing basis, either through product licensing or by establishing start-up companies under the auspices of Hadassah or Hadasit Bio-Holdings Ltd. (TASE:HDST).

Hadasit has gained global recognition for successfully enterprising biomedical technologies developed at Hadassah and has a portfolio of over 300 patent families covering a wide variety of novel therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices.

On Sunday, Renee Resnik, the Mid-West Center Chair and a member of the Hadassah National Board, will lead two participatory sessions based on the premise that "You have to care enough to want to dream."

We will look at what Hadassah means to us, what our dreams are for Hadassah's future, and learn how we have the power to make those dreams a reality.

Ziva, a Muslim-born Zionist,
Speaks at Beth David

Born into a traditional Muslim family in India, local resident, Ziva went against all odds to acquire a high school and university degree in a scientific field and married the man of her choice - a Jewish man also born and raised in India.

Ziva will share her experience of marrying her high school sweetheart, moving to Israel, and coming to love the Jewish State. She will describe what it means to be a woman in a Muslim society and what she went through upon her conversion to Judaism.

Hear about her first tastes of real freedom in Israel and how she was warmly received and mentored by Israelis. Ziva will discuss what she sees as the growing intolerance among many moderate Muslims towards Israel and Jews. She will outline how she believes we can counter anti-Israel and anti-Jewish attacks in the media.

This event is sponsored by Sharone Hadassah and the Congregation Beth David Adult Education Committee. It is a privilege for us to host Ziva. Be sure to join us.
